Lanzarote is the Canary Island that looks least like a brochure and wins people over anyway. Most of it is black lava field, low whitewashed building and almost no high-rise, because the island decided decades ago that it would rather not have them. The scenery does the talking, and the resorts stay small enough to walk across in an afternoon.
That makes the choice of base more consequential than it is on a bigger island. Four resorts take nearly all the visitors and they differ genuinely in pace, in beach and in what sits within walking distance. Settling that before you look at star ratings is the single most useful thing you can do when booking a week in the Canaries.
Four Resorts, Four Different Weeks
Playa Blanca occupies the southern tip and is the calmest of the three main resorts, with sheltered swimming and a seafront promenade long enough to be a daily walk rather than a stroll. Costa Teguise sits on the east coast, flatter and breezier, which suits families and anyone who has ever considered windsurfing. Puerto del Carmen is the oldest and liveliest, carrying the longest run of bars and restaurants on the island. Puerto Calero is barely a resort at all — it is a marina, and it is where you go if you want very little to happen after dinner.
Five Places to Stay
Sandos Papagayo
Playa Blanca. Free-form pools, a terrace scattered with palms and direct access onto the beachfront promenade, which is the detail that decides how a week actually feels — you can walk out of the gate and keep going. The sports facilities are better than the category usually manages, and the All Inclusive runs around the clock rather than closing at ten.
Iberostar Selection Lanzarote Park
Playa Blanca. Sat in a peaceful stretch of the resort and divided into three distinct sections — family, mixed and adult — which is a more honest answer to the will-it-be-noisy question than most places manage. Seven outdoor pools and a seafront position, with upgraded rooms held in their own quieter corner.

Barcelo Lanzarote Active Resort
Costa Teguise. Built around doing things rather than lying still: seven pools including a splash park, and a programme aimed squarely at people who get restless by day three. It sits in the quiet end of the resort, and the transfer from the airport is included rather than bolted on.
Hotel Fariones
Puerto del Carmen. A five-star on the island’s busiest strip sounds contradictory until you see the position — seafront, with its own beach access and an infinity pool facing the Atlantic. You get the restaurants of Puerto del Carmen nearby without sleeping in the middle of them. The five-star tier on this island is small, and this is the pick of it.
Hotel Costa Calero Thalasso and Spa
Puerto Calero. Overlooking the marina, with four outdoor pools and a thalasso spa that actually uses seawater rather than simply calling itself wellness. The nearest thing to a genuinely quiet week on an island that is already quiet, and the marina restaurants are a two-minute walk.
The Half of the Island Nobody Books For
Timanfaya National Park is twenty minutes inland from Playa Blanca and looks like nowhere else in Europe: rust and ochre craters, ground still hot a few metres down, and a coach road that is the only way through. Go early, because the queue builds through the morning and there is no shade in the car park.
The rest is just as worth the hire car. The salt flats at Janubio, the green lagoon at El Golfo, the cactus garden in the north — all are short drives on empty roads. Most hotels across the island sit within forty minutes of every one of them, which is the practical argument for not overthinking the resort choice.
Which Beach You Are Actually After
Playa Blanca’s beaches are small, sheltered and golden; the famous Papagayo coves are a rough track away and worth the suspension. Costa Teguise has wider, windier sand. Puerto del Carmen has the longest continuous beach and the most to do behind it. Nothing on the island is more than an hour from anything else, so the question is only where you want to come back to each evening.
Weigh the wind, the lava and how far dinner is, and your base chooses itself. Jet2holidays gathers all four of this island’s resorts under one reservation. Choices of exactly this shape get argued out at 2minuteread.
